Simple remedies to stop sneezing
Sneezing used to be normal prior to 2020. But with the onset of COVID, one cough or a sneeze can put you in a spot where everyone around you wants to stay at least 6 feet away from you. But even other than the COVID taboo, when you get more than one sneeze it might be embarrassing in a public place, not to mention the discomfort. Thus to make things easier for you, we are here with some simple remedies to stop sneezing.
Why do we sneeze?
We sneeze when our body tries to expel an irritant out through the nose. The irritation could be due to an allergic reaction, a sudden change in temperatur, some foreign particle in the nose etc. The irritation in the nose causes you to sneeze, also known as sternutation.
Ways To Stop Sneezing
Identify Your Trigger
For a very long period of time, a lot of people are unaware of their trigger points. Some of them are:
- dust
- pollen
- mold
- pet dander
- bright lights
- perfume
- spicy foods
- black pepper
- common cold viruses
If you think your sneezes are caused due to such triggers; you can consult a doctor and get medication for the same.
Say ‘pickles’
A very weird remedy but tested by a lot of people is that if you say ‘pickles’, your sneezing will stop. The theory behind this is that if you say weird words, you basically distract your mind to stop sneezing.
Don’t eat too much
A few researchers believe that if a person eats a lot, he/she will have a tendency to sneeze often. This condition isn’t well understood by a majority of scientists and researchers. A researcher nicknamed it snatiation, which is a combination of the words “sneeze” and “satiation” (feeling full). This is more useful if you are prone to frequent sneezing, avoiding overeating helps you anyway.
Tickle the roof of the mouth
Tickling the roof of the mouth can also provide relief from sneezing. The theory behind this concept is that by ticking you stimulate the roof of the mouth which further helps to stifle a sneeze. You are simply pitting the sensation in your mouth against the one in your nose to avoid the sneeze.
Eucalyptus Oil
Adding a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to your handkerchief will give you relief from sneezing. Eucalyptus oil is loaded with a compound called citronella, which works as an expectorant (promotes the secretion of sputum by the air passages) and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
